Tips for choosing a facility for evaluation and treatment.
1. Research several facilities including viewing thier web pages, talking to staff at facility, and if possible, speak with past clients of the facility.
2. Know what to expect upon arrival and during your stay at the facility. For instance, if you are going for an evaluation, inquire exactly what the evaluation entails. The program director should be able to explain what evaluation tools and screens the facility utilizes.
3. Know what the living arrangements will be at the facility. Some facilities may offer housing arrangements while many may require you to stay at a nearby hotel and provide your own meals.
4. Know what is expected of you in terms of the evaluation of treatment. For instance, will you be expected to undergo medical exams, drug screens, cognitive test, etc. Also will you be asked to undergo evaluation tools or screenings such as polographs that the facility may use, but have little scientific basis for use or reliability.
5. Know what releases or consents for disclosure you will be asked to sign ahead of time. Typically the facility will ask you to sign a release for staff to communicate with persons familiar with you such as family, friends, employers, co-workers, etc. You will also be asked to sign a release for disclosure of your evaluation results or records directly to the APHP. It is best to know what forms and releses the facility will request or require ahead of time rather than being pressed to sign once you have already commited to a facility and paid the fees for evaluation and treatment.
6. Get a feel for the staff and the methods employed by the facility. You want to choose a facility where you feel comfortable with the staff and methods of evaluation and treatment utilized by the facility prior to committing to attend.
7. Know how much one on one time you will have with the counselors and theraphist as opposed to group theraphy and choose the facilty that provides the best fit in helping you meet your goals.
8. Know exactly how long the treatment and evaluation will take. If a exact time cannot be given, try to get a range so that you can make the proper arranges for your practice and other personal business to be addressed while you are away.
9. Make sure you know what will be provided at the facility and what you need to bring with you for your stay.
10. Above all, take the necessary time to research the facility and staff in regards to training, facilities, treatment modualities, support, and ability to work with you in meeting your goals before committing to a particular program.
